Every child’s journey towards a straighter, more balanced smile starts with an orthodontic consultation with their dentist. Learn how to tell if your child needs braces and what you can expect during their examination below.

Signs Your Child Could Need Braces

There are countless reasons why a child may require braces before all of their baby teeth have fallen out, which typically occurs between 10 and 14 years old. Five of the most common signs that a child could benefit from Phase 1 orthodontics, or braces for children, include:

Your child breathes through their mouth when they sleep.

Their jaw is not proportional to the rest of their head.

They have difficulty speaking easily.

They continue non-nutritive habits, like thumb-sucking, past the age of four.

Their teeth are noticeably crooked, crowded, or gapped, and they don’t come together evenly.

At What Age Should Children Receive an Orthodontic Evaluation?

If you notice any of the signs above, the best next step to take would be to schedule an orthodontic evaluation for your child. During this visit, the dentist will capture X-rays of the mouth and conduct a thorough evaluation of your child’s teeth and dental development. They’ll also ask you about any signs that you’ve noticed that you feel could be related to orthodontic concerns and gather a complete dental and medical history.

After this, their dentist will walk you through whether they feel Phase 1 orthodontics is necessary for your child, as well as what that process would look like. They’ll also answer any questions you may have, ensuring that parents feel 100 percent confident moving forward.

What is Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment?

Phase 1 orthodontics is for children with mixed dentition, or both their temporary and permanent teeth. It can include a variety of services, ranging from regular braces to palate expanders and headgear, but it will depend on what concerns your child faces. The goal of this treatment is to make sure that there’s enough room for the permanent teeth to properly erupt as well as reduce the severity of future orthodontic concerns like overcrowding and bite problems, minimizing the need for surgical and more extensive intervention.

Phase 1 orthodontics has helped millions of young patients across the country drastically reduce their need for more intensive treatments down the road, helping them have a more positive and comfortable experience in middle and high school.

About the Author

Dr. Rafiq Hirji has been practicing dentistry for well over a decade and has completed additional specialized training in orthodontics and children’s dentistry.
