When you’re a parent, you have to be prepared for anything, which is a nearly impossible feat! If your child comes running up to you because they knocked out a tooth playing basketball or falling off of their bike, what do you do? In these moments, it can be hard to think on-the-spot. Read on to learn what steps you should take if the unexpected happens and your child knocks out a tooth.
Step 1: Reach Out to an Emergency Dentist
When your child knocks out a tooth, you may find that it’s either a relatively quick and painless situation, or it could be traumatic. First, you must determine if they’re experiencing any life-threatening symptoms, such as bleeding that won’t stop or a broken jaw. If so, they will need to go to the nearest emergency room. If not, call your emergency dentist in Irving as soon as possible.
Step 2: Prepare for the Visit
If you’re able to find your child’s knocked-out tooth, pick it up (being sure to only hold it by the crown, not the roots), and gently rinse it under cool water. You can keep it viable by storing it in a container of milk or placing it back in the socket it came from. Be sure to stay calm and remember to breathe, because everything will be okay!
Step 3: Bring Your Child in for an Exam
When your child arrives at the dental office, they will be escorted to a treatment area. The team will capture X-rays (if necessary), and the emergency dentist will examine their mouth. They will discuss their findings with you and your child, answer any questions you may have, and lay out a treatment plan to help restore the dental damage and get them comfortable again. Treatment plans can vary depending on whether they knocked out a permanent or temporary tooth.
Step 4: Get Them the Treatment They Need
After your child’s emergency dentist has developed a treatment plan, you will have a chance to ask any questions you may have. In some cases, depending on the treatment needed, they may be able to complete the procedure that same day. However, if a more extensive service is required, they will help ease their pain and schedule an appointment as soon as possible for their treatment.
